| Clam Chowder Cook Off
For the last 10 years I have been one of the judges at the Clam Chowder Cook Off on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk that takes place every February. Two of the judges at my table were Karl Konrad, sales manager for Berkeley Farms – as they supply all the half and half cream and regular cream needed to make a delicious Boston-style chowder – and Robin Donovan, general manager of the Dream Inn, where all the out-of-town judges stayed. We had an absolute blast tasting all the different chowders, and I hope we sit together next year. Amazingly, Severino’s Grill (in the Best Western in Aptos) won again in the Best Professional category for both Boston and Manhattan chowder. This restaurant has won so many times that they must be doing something right.
Carniglia’s
Talking of clam chowder, my husband and I had been wine tasting at Vino Prima on the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf, and then stopped in to take a look at the new décor in Carniglia’s. The restaurant has new owners and it’s all been redecorated – and with a new menu as well. As talk about the Clam Chowder Cook Off cropped up, the manager, Julie Ulm, very kindly gave us two bowls of their version to try. It’s delicious. I can’t wait to have dinner at the new Carniglia’s.
Shadowbrook Restaurant
The Ultimate Winemakers Dinner is held at Shadowbrook every February, and it’s an event that I really look forward to. I love to meet winemakers from different wineries and try their wines. This year, I sat at the Naumann Vineyards table with Don Naumann, and enjoyed a splendid five-course dinner – each course paired with a Naumann wine. Especially good was my entrée of roasted squab. Squab is basically another name for “pigeon” – but I had it anyway!
